Cloistered Dominican Nuns Corpus Christi Monastery

Together For Study and Communion: Dominican Nuns From Around North America

“The blessed Dominic recommended some form of study
to the first nuns as an authentic observance of the Order…
The nuns are to be instructed particularly in the Sacred Scriptures,
in which they can contemplate the mystery of salvation…”

 – From the Constitutions of the Nuns of the Order of Preachers

Part of the formation of our young sisters is to participate in a more formal course of study sponsored by the Association of Nuns of the Order of Preachers of North America.  Sisters of most Dominican monasteries in North America (including the monasteries of the United States, Canada and Trinidad) who have professed temporary vows are eligible to participate in the four-year course of studies.  The program is coordinated by a committee of nuns from various monasteries and assisted by the friar professors from the four Provinces in the United States . Each year, the participating sisters gather for two weeks at a hosting monastery (currently, Monastery of Our Lady of the Rosary in Summit, NJ).

Our own Sr. Mary Isabel is taking part in the current four-year course and so has been in Summit, NJ this week (and will be there next week as well).  While we miss her here, we are so excited for her continued formation and studies, and for this opportunity for her to meet and get to know other sisters from our monasteries around North America.

Before leaving for the Monastic Theological Studies program, Sister Mary Isabel gave to our community her two presentations she will be giving. The first presentation was on the Parable of the Sower and the Seed, exposing the development of the proper spiritual disposition of man to enter the kingdom of God. The second presentation was on the Science of Knowing Objective Truth in an attempt to answer the questions of how human self-knowledge differ from God’s self-knowledge and how self-knowledge of angels contrast with divine and human self-knowledge.  A wonderful practice of sharing to others the fruit of her study and contemplation!
