Part Four – THE DESERT AND THE CROSS: A Meditation Series on the Temptations of Jesus in the Desert Through the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary

2015.03.13 Crucifix Canticle of the Passion 04

Third Mystery: Jesus is crowned with thorns – You must worship the Lord your God, and serve Him alone.

Having failed with his first temptation, the Evil One leads you to a high mountain peak for his second temptation.  Looking out at the vast horizon, he whispers in your ear, “All that you see could be yours – you could rule all the peoples and kingdoms of the world, if you only worship me.”  How many have fallen into sins of lust of the eyes!  We see something and want it – power, prestige, wealth, material goods, and more.  We envy those who have what we want instead of rejoicing in their blessings.  We hoard our possessions instead of generously giving to those in need.  We seek to be served instead of serving others, and we grow angry when we feel we are not being given our due.

Jesus, no one but you was, is, or ever will be deserving of ruling all the kingdoms and peoples of the world, of possessing all there is to possess.  Yet, you “did not deem equality with God something to be grasped at.”  You humbled yourself and took on human flesh!  For love of us!  Yet, You, the One who should rightfully be worshipped, endured the cruel torment of being crowned with thorns and mocked.  We can see Satan laughing and jeering along with your tormentors as they hit and spit on you.  The One who would not worship Satan was made poor, made powerless, and ridiculed!

As we meditate on your crowning with thorns, may we be strengthened against sins from lust of the eyes with your words, “You must worship the Lord your God, and serve Him alone.”
