Cloistered Dominican Nuns Corpus Christi Monastery

Meet Our [Many] Blessed Mannes

Today the Dominican Order celebrates the feast of Blessed Mannes, who was St. Dominic’s elder brother. Knowing that he couldn’t personally care for all the nuns, St. Dominic entrusted the spiritual care of his daughters to the fraternal concern of his sons, but more specifically to his own brother Mannes.

Blessed Mannes is often described as “a contemplative and holy man, meek and humble, joyful and kind, and a zealous preacher.”  After all it takes a special degree of humility and holiness to follow wholeheartedly in the footsteps of a younger, more gifted sibling. To this day, we still enjoy the special fraternal care of Blessed Mannes in the image of Fr. César Valero Bajo, O.P.  who was appointed by the Master of the Order to be the Promoter for all the nuns of the Order.  Our monastery also enjoys the privilege of having a Vicar, who is representative of the Master, Fr. Mark Padrez, O.P.

This past May, after a retreat he had given to all the Dominican Nuns in the North America region, Fr. César came to our monastery for a fraternal visit.  Below are some precious pictures of Fr. César and the spiritual wisdom he shared with the nuns…

01.DSC04796…Greetings of the Master [of the Order] because he knows very well your life and your situation… I can learn from him the love for the nuns..the [Master] always says: “The nuns are a very, very, very important part of the Order.”
You are in the heart of the Order. And this is very important for the world and for the Order…

I am a poor brother at your service…in this service to the Order, among you, I feel I am a prolongation of the Master because it is not always possible for the Master to be present with you…
03.DSC04789The language of heaven is love and joy…because everyone understands this…

04.DSC04807For [St. Dominic], the most important thing to being a Dominican is to live for God. How? The way is to put our eyes and our heart and our will at work for him…
…Study in Dominican life is very, very important. Our study must be the love of Jesus Christ. We are the family of the Specialists of Christ…this anxiety to know and to be rooted in Christ is the Order of Preachers….we need time for this formation because our formation [in Christ] is never finished…

…it’s necessary to give time for our fraternal communion [recreation and meeting] because without fraternity it is not Dominican…
