An Invitation We Couldn’t Refuse…The Opening Jubilee Mass and Words of Wisdom from The Master of the Order!

800 years!  It was 800 years ago that the Order of Preachers was officially founded.  On Saturday October 31st, the Dominican family in the Western Province gathered at St. Dominic Church in San Francisco, along with our friends and benefactors, to begin the year long Jubilee celebration with the Master of the Order, Father Bruno Cadoré presiding and preaching at the Mass. Our community was granted special permission to be present among our brothers and sisters and share the joy of the celebration.

One of our sisters was asked at the celebration: “How often do you go to a joyful celebration like this?” “Once every 800 years!” was her reply. It was indeed a privilege and a blessing for all of us (not only for the nuns but the friars, active sisters and Dominican laity) in the Province to be with the Master and spent time with one another during this unique time for the Order and the Province. It was definitely a little memorable trip to the city that none of us in the Province would ever forget!

Below are a few pictures we wish to share with you, along with words of wisdom from our Master as he preached at the Mass. Photos courtesy of the sisters in our community, Lisa Hamrick, OPL, and Charo/Balthazar Paguirre, OPL.

…And a little time catching up with our brothers who came from all over the Province…

Then the Eucharistic Sacrifice of the Mass…the best way to give thanks to God for our mission of preaching.

My dear brothers and sisters, it is really a great joy…to celebrate this Mass of opening the year of the Jubilee of the Order. And it is a joy to celebrate the memory of the all Saints and Blesseds of the Order in this beloved Province of the Holy Name of Jesus Christ.

Who are they, these Saints? …the Order proposed to us to celebrate the memory of large numbers of Blesseds and Saints…from St. Dominic to Catherine to Blessed Jordan, St. Martin de Porres, St. Albert, St. Thomas, …Blessed Frassati, Giuseppe…and so many other blessed women and men.

The Dominican life of each one is an example for us, but today we celebrate with them the memory of the brothers and sisters and laity who … also had left all as St. Dominic did and followed Jesus, the first among the preachers. By making this decision, they chose to receive the mission of Evangelization their way of sanctification.

Indeed , when Pope Honorius III wrote one of the confirmations of the Order he decided to impose the Evangelization of the Holy Name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of the sins of the preachers…he wanted to indicate to the preachers that the ministry of preaching as it could be the way of their consecration, of their personal unification…it could be also their way of sanctification. In a certain way, we celebrate, brothers and sisters, their and our call to sanctity by preaching.

What does this mean? First, it means that like the friends of Jesus, they left all to learn at the school of the compassion of the Son of man.  They left all to join this first community of friends who accompanied Jesus when he proclaimed the Good News of the Kingdom… They left all and they discovered that preaching roots at the source of the compassion of Jesus.

…The way of holiness starts with being moved by mercy of God. This year of Jubilee teaches us new opportunities to play the role, to renew in us this sense of compassion.

OPWest Jubilee20 Lisa w logosFr. Mark Padrez, O.P., Provincial of the Western Province, lighted a large candle (like the Easter Candle) that was beautifully decorated with the logo of the Jubilee. This reminds us that St Dominic has always been associated with light and he is known as the “Light of the Church” (Lumen Ecclesiae).

Brothers and sisters, during this year let us look for and pay attention more to the needs of this Church…by strengthening Evangelization…[pay] more attention to that this year than to our own internal concerns…

…let us be sent by the Holy Spirit to places where the Holy Name of Christ has not been yet evangelized…has not yet known.

…all these Saints that we celebrate today found in the example of Dominic the strength to take this way of sanctification, without fear. The proclamation of the Kingdom is a call to live the compassion of Jesus…to desire with him communion…and to give our own life with Jesus…so that all receive life in abundant.

Yet today we celebrate the way in which we can receive the joy in learning how to let Christ be preached in us.

Jubilee Prayer

God, Father of mercy,
who called your servant Dominic de Guzman
to set out in faith as an itinerant pilgrim
and a preacher of grace,
as we prepare to celebrate the Jubilee of the Order
we ask you to pour again into us
the Spirit of the Risen Christ,
that we might faithfully and joyfully proclaim
the Gospel of peace,
through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
