Advent Inside The Monastery

A Reflection from the Novitiate…

Practicing Hymns for Christmas
Practicing for Christmas

While the world around us swirls with Christmas music, bells and bows, red and green decorations, extra traffic from holiday shoppers who are beginning the last-minute frenzy of finding the perfect gift in between holiday parties, the monastery has appeared in comparison rather sleepy.

Yet, there is an undercurrent of hopeful anticipation and steadily increasing preparation. We feel it as we hear the readings during Mass and pray the Office – the anticipation builds as we moved into praying the O Antiphons and put the final touches on Christmas liturgy preparations.

Early in the season, we spent several days in retreat, preparing our hearts and minds for the season and the coming of Christmas. Since then, between our regular work, we’ve included extra tasks in preparation for Christmas – increased choir rehearsals for liturgies, evening recreations spent preparing Christmas cards, cookies and breads being baked and tucked away for Christmas.

Cookies being tucked away…

We have just now brought out our Christmas decorations on Saturday and the novitiate has been busy decking the halls and other rooms in the monastery! Creativity is a must when trying to decorate a home that is nearly 100 years old – many walls are too hard to pierce with a nail or thumbtack and electric outlets are very scarce and fuses can be tripped if one is not careful! This year, we are also transforming a room on our third floor for our Christmas dinner and festivities.

Transforming Our 3rd Floor

We are looking forward to the arrival of our tree for the community room and will be putting the finishing touches on decorating. Next up today, the novitiate has been baking some treats for our little breakfast celebration after the Christmas vigil. And tonight, we will hold our traditional joyous chapter.

The excitement and anticipation is building for the coming of our Infant King. And then, we celebrate with joy! Come, Lord Jesus!
