800 Years and Counting! The Jubilee Opening at Corpus Christi Monastery

Jubilee year candle lighting IMG_0241

Our Prioress, Sr. Maria Christine, O.P. lighted the candle, signifying the opening of the Jubilee. This candle will remain lit all day and night, throughout the Jubilee year!

Finally, after years of preparation, on November 7th, as we celebrated the Feast of All Dominican Saints and Blesseds, Father Bruno Cadoré, O.P., the 87th Master of the Order of Preachers and successor of our Holy Founder, Saint Dominic opened the Jubilee Door of the Basilica in Santa Sabina, Rome, and officially began the Eight Centenary Jubilee of the Order of Preachers.  On this day, Dominicans from around the world joined the celebration in their own monastery, priory or parish.

We also joined this blessed day in our community with the celebration of the Eucharist in the morning then procession and chanting the Litany after Vespers; and a community party at supper for more sharing and sisterly communion..the Dominican style!

Jubilee Candle and Cake IMG_0311We were told that at the end of the Mass in Santa Sabina, the usual “The Mass is ended….” was not said! This was because the opening of the Jubilee was only the beginning and we, as Dominicans, are “being sent out once again to preach anew.”

Let us follow the exhortation of our Master: to contemplate deeply the mercy of God and learn at the school of compassion of Jesus. And after we’ve been healed, forgiven, renewed, restored, and raised up by the Son of of man, we must preach and offer the same mercy to our brothers and sisters.

Joined to Jesus, our lives are transformed with the light of love, and we are nourished to share the light with a darkened, hungry world.

Throughout this Jubilee year of our Order, and the Year of Mercy for our Holy Mother Church, our monastery will host special events so check back for more!

Deo Gratias!
